Electrolytes as an Intermittent Faster

I have been intermittent fasting for nearly 3 years.  I did the first 2 without ever adding in electrolytes.  However, my first 72 hour fast I openly shared that I had really sore legs. YouTube commenters shared that electrolytes would have likely helped and they were RIGHT!

Electrolytes and Fasting

During fasting periods, the body may become depleted of certain nutrients, including electrolytes, which are essential for proper bodily function. LMNT electrolytes are a  possible solution to this issue – they’ve worked really well for me!

They use a ration of sodium, magnesium and potassium that is science backed.  I love their fruity flavors and prefer to drink it daily as part of my eating window.  NOTE: If during a fast, I only consume their unflavored version.

They come in convenient single-serve packets that can be easily mixed with water to create a refreshing drink.  I love the watermelon flavor most.  I mainly mix it with a flavored sparkling water.  But if looking for a a bit more, I sometimes add it to lemonade or a margarita!!!  SO, SO GOOD!!

But why?!

But why are electrolytes so important during fasting periods? Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and play a vital role in maintaining proper fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle function in the body. They include sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

During fasting, the body may experience a drop in electrolyte levels due to reduced food and fluid intake. This can lead to symptoms such as headaches, muscle cramps or soreness (my issue on longer fasts), fatigue, and dizziness. By supplementing with LMNT electrolytes, individuals may be able to replenish these essential minerals and alleviate these symptoms.

One of the key benefits of LMNT electrolytes is their high sodium content. While sodium has been demonized in the past for its association with high blood pressure, it is actually a crucial electrolyte that plays a vital role in regulating fluid balance and blood pressure in the body. During fasting periods, the body may lose sodium through increased urine output and sweating. Supplementing with LMNT electrolytes can help to restore sodium levels and prevent dehydration.

In addition to sodium, LMNT electrolytes also contain potassium and magnesium, which are important for nerve and muscle function. Potassium helps to regulate heart function and blood pressure, while magnesium is necessary for muscle relaxation and energy production.

I have this drawer that I put mom’s snacks in. I have this drawer that I put mom’s snacks in.  It used to be a secret, but everyone knows about it now.  It’s just off limits - unless you’re me 😅  Today I added mini bags of gummy bears.  I love these things and now have roughly 54 of them 🥳. They’ll last me a very long time.
