The Joy of Savoring One Meal a Day

Let’s talk about something magical today—how much better food tastes when you eat just one meal a day! I’ve been practicing OMAD (One Meal a Day) for four years now, and let me tell you, that single meal feels like a feast every time. It’s funny to think about how different eating feels compared to when I used to graze all day long, barely noticing what I was putting in my mouth.

A smiling woman in a kitchen enjoys a slice of pie, with more pie and a mug in front of her.

When you’re eating all day, food can lose its *~specialness~*. You might snack out of habit, boredom, or convenience, and after a while, it feels like you’re just going through the motions. You grab a handful of chips, a sandwich here, maybe a cookie there, and by the end of the day, can you even remember what you ate? Worse yet, sometimes it doesn’t even feel satisfying.

Now contrast that with OMAD—one delicious, satisfying meal that you’ve been looking forward to all day. That first bite? It’s like a celebration! Your taste buds wake up, and every flavor is so much more vibrant. You savor each bite, appreciating every taste and texture because you’ve spent the whole day building up a genuine hunger for it. It’s like eating becomes an event, not just something you do because it’s lunchtime or snack time.

For me, this has been one of the biggest joys of intermittent fasting: food tastes better, and I appreciate it more. It’s not about restriction; it’s about truly experiencing the meal and eating to satisfaction. I no longer feel the need to overeat or mindlessly snack, because when I do eat, it’s amazing!

Plus, there’s something so freeing about not constantly thinking about food. When I was eating all day, my mind was always on “What’s next?” or in regret about the choices I made earlier.  Now, I focus on other things throughout the day, and when meal time rolls around, it feels like I can truly enjoy it. It’s a moment to savor, not just something to check off the list.

If you’re on the fence about trying OMAD, I encourage you to give it a shot. You’ll be amazed at how much more you enjoy your meals—and how much better you feel overall!
